One of the primary reasons I cut my hair was the desire to keep it simple. Less hair, less work. Now that I’ve cut my hair, I’ve also made a point to keep my regimen simple. I didn’t want to have to pack a ton of products when traveling and I didn’t want to have to unnecessarily BUY a ton of products. I use one product line, Cantu. Each product is relatively inexpensive and work amazingly in my hair. Since I’ve gotten my tapered cut, my curls have definitely popped. With the fried dead ends gone, the perfect products were the icing on the cake.
Recently winning the 2017 CurlBox Best Leave-In Conditioner, Cantu offers me incredible definition and shine. Using the Cantu Color Protecting w/ Quinoa line, leaves my hair soft, vibrant, and strong. The Super Shine Hair Silk oil is a MUST have for me. Massaging it into my scalp after each wash, no doubt retains moisture and encourages growth through stimulation. More importantly, Cantu’s line of natural hair products does not weigh down my hair or leave my curls stiff and I have not experienced any flaking.
Here is a list of my go-to products and steps that keep my curls poppin’ with a simple wash-and-go :
Five Cantu Products:
- Anti Fade Color Protecting Shampoo with Quinoa Protein
- Color Protecting Conditioner with Quinoa
- Super Shine Hair Silk
- Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream, 16 Ounce
- Cantu Wave Whip Curling Mousse
Wash-and-Go:
- After washing twice with the Cantu Color Protecting Shampoo, apply a generous amount of Cantu Color Protecting Conditioner
- While working the conditioner through hair from root to ends with fingers, make sure to massage scalp
- Leave the conditioner in for 5 minutes and rinse hair to remove product
- Tip: Rinse with cool water. Doesn’t have to be ice cold, just cooler
- Using a towel (or t-shirt if you prefer) squeeze the excess water out vs rubbing the hair causing more friction
- Add Cantu Super Shine Oil sparingly through hair and massage into scalp
- Scoop out Cantu Leave-In Conditioner using three fingers and work through hair from root to end
- Pump three squirts of Cantu Wave Whip Curling Mousse and apply to hair in a scrunching motion
- Apply three more squirts of mousse to curls, focusing on scrunching the ends
- Pin or clip middle section of hair to the top of your head to help shape the hair as it dries
- Allow hair to air dry and remove pins/clip from top of your head
- Using a pick, fluff the middle section of hair from the root only
- Fluff the back to lower nape section from the root only
That’s all there is to it! This regimen is very basic so it allows you room to add in more products if you like or keep it simple like I do. What works for me is avoiding products that weigh down my hair and define my curls enough to last more than a day. Hopefully, my simple regimen for keeping my tapered cut curls poppin’ works for you!

Hello! My name is Courtney. I’ve been natural for years but never really done much styling to my hair. I stumbled upon your link and boy am I glad I did. Your hair is stunning! However, I have one question regarding the how-to get your curls to pop for the tapered style. What do you mean by “Pin or clip middle section of hair to the top of your head to help shape the hair as it dries”? I pictured this 100 ways in my head and not really sure what you meant. Forgive me, I over think things all the time. Thank you.
Hi Courtney! It’s great to know how happy you are over finding this post. Thank you for reading and leaving your comment and question. I over think things all the time so you are not alone. Lol First, before answering your question, it would be helpful to clarify if you have a tapered cut or if you are using this simple regimen as a wash-and-go for your natural hair?
