Curve-hugging, latex, thigh-high slits and laser-precise cutouts, and fishnets are some of the things that set Laquan Smith apart from the rest of the fashion industry. You probably have seen his designs on your fave celebrity or fashion it girl, like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and more.

Smith is NYC born and bred, which translates into his tough and strong design aesthetic. He got his start in fashion as a mentee to THE Andre Leon Talley, yes, Vogue Magazine’s Editor-at-Large. I mean could the fashion gawds have smiled on him anymore?
Laquan has described his work as being for the “young, fun, and sexy.” His two signature pieces which are on opposite sides of the fashion spectrum but absolutely fit into those categories: the NOVA dress and his thigh-high LQS boots.

The NOVA dress is perfect for dinner parties, work events, and even church. I love the cinched in waist and flared out skirt that perfectly hides to a food baby or any imperfections in the midsection one may be insecure about. I can’t wait to see how if it will be reimagined at his, Fall/Winter 2018 show on February 14th!

On the flipside, we have his infamous thigh-high boots that are on his website, LaquanSmith.com. These are for the fashion forward woman that is not afraid of making a statement. The puffer boot takes me back to NYC winters of the 90’s when the black bubble coat was as much a necessity as it was a fashion statement.

Laquan is on my NYFW radar because he is a designer of color and his pieces speak to the edginess of NYC bodegas and the classiness of the Upper East Side all at the same time. I like classic pieces with an edge, and he definitely knows how to take a skirt to the next level. He has made a steady climb since debuting in 2010 and I can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us. I’ll be keeping an eye on social media for glimpses at his show.
