I’ll admit it: sometimes I get bored with my hair. Has that ever happened to you? You gaze in the mirror at your puff/twist-out/braid-out and feel a tiny twinge of boredom with the revolving door of go-to styles? When those moments happen for me, I generally run to my stylist and ask for a new haircut. However, since I made a pact with my ‘fro to grow it out this year, this summer I decided to try something a bit different than the norm: up-do’s. Not just standard up-do’s, either: I aimed for a vintage approach to these up-do’s.

First, here’s what I’m talking about when I say vintage up-do:

Lovely, aren’t they? Here’s why I fell in love with these looks:

They’re easy to do!

Another admission: I tend to stay in the same lane when it comes to my hair (no surprise that I mentioned the puff/twistout/braidout earlier), mostly because those are the styles I know how to do. Other looks become a bit more complex for me. So imagine my surprise when I was able to swoop and tuck and pull off these vintage up-dos without breaking a sweat! It’s because they’re actually quite easy to accomplish. Grab some bobby pins, a bit of moisturizer, some gel, and you’re good to go!

They’re classy and creative.

To me, the word ‘vintage’ is powerful. I think of women of color in the 1940s when I see these up-do’s, their hair elegantly coiffed to complement their fitted, structured outfits. So classy and stylish. When it comes to creativity, I love that no up-do looks the same. The looks give me an opportunity to see where my hair styling takes me: whether I want a bang in the front, or whether I want three, or whether I want to do something completely different. In other words, the word “boredom” doesn’t apply when it comes to these up-do’s, and I love it.

They’re timeless.

Up-do’s truly saved me this summer. I didn’t have to worry about my hair being in my face or my neck during the endlessly hot days, which can make summer feel even hotter. Even better: it’s a style that can go year-round. Whether fall, winter, or spring, the styles remain chic and, especially during the cooler days of fall and winter, are great protective styles, as well.

To conclude, boredom happens. Whether in life or in hair. But boredom is actually good, in my opinion, because it gives us a chance to seek change and look for inspiration. Even if it’s not an up-do, when you find a style that allows you to be classy, creative, and show it off all year long, how can you go wrong?
