Cutting your hair is a big decision. Deciding on WHO cuts your hair is an even bigger decision. While most women think to go to a professional stylist, a professional barber should definitely be considered an option for a natural hair cut. After all, barbers cut hair day in and day out. In my experience, there are pros and cons to both. Sometimes I go to a stylist, sometimes I go to a barber. For me, it depends on the stage of growth and style goal. In this post, I’ll help you decide on going to a salon or barbershop for a natural hair cut. Let’s get to it!

Salon:

Going to a professional stylist is familiar and comfortable. It is also typically easier to find a good stylist close to you, out of the many available. You can get your  hair cut, washed, and styled; which is not the case for a barbershop. However, with the good comes the bad. You will spend a few hours of your day, if not all day at a salon.

In my opinion, most natural hair stylists can execute the perfect cut and shape of your hair style.

A stylist will also know what cut will work best for your curl type, texture, volume, etc. This is one of the biggest pros for going to a professional stylist. The biggest con, is in the details and precision. The line up, taper, fade, etc. is what I suggest going to a professional barber for.

Barbershop:

As mentioned above, barbers are masters of their craft. For this reason, I love going to a barber for a very clean line up and taper. If you like to try fun styles or designs like myself, it’s best to go to a barber.

In my opinion, the precision is unmatched when it comes down to details.

The biggest con here is not all barbers are comfortable cutting women’s hair. If you pick the wrong barber, your line up can end up looking too masculine. Besides that, you won’t leave with washed and styled hair. You will, however, leave within the hour. Barbers get you in and get you out. And who doesn’t love efficient use of their time? Not to mention, good use of your dollars. I have spent $25 max, on my visits to the barbershop. That’s hands down, the best pro.

Here is how I mix up my cuts. I typically go to a professional hair stylist to get my hair washed and styled for the initial natural hair cut. After the initial cut, I go to a barber for maintaining my style. Once my hair starts growing out, I return to my stylist for trims or styling. As usual, I recommend doing what works best for you. The most important part of getting a natural hair cut, is to feel comfortable with the person doing the cutting.

Barber or stylist, always go to a professional. Unless you like bald spots or accidental big chops.
