Protective styles are a naturalistas’ saving grace. Despite the installation time, we are definitely fans of the super trendy faux locs. The low maintenance can’t be beat! So we are willing to put forth the effort and time it takes to achieve this beautiful style. In this post, you will be provided step by step instructions on how to install faux locs using the no burn, no glue method. As one of my most popular YouTube tutorials, I can assure you will feel confident about tackling this hairstyle after a little practice and patience. Let’s get started.
What I used:
- 6 packs of Modu Marley Braid (Color 4)
- 2 packs of LoMe Natural Kinky Braid (Marley/Color 30)
- 2 packs of LoMe Natural Kinky Braid (Marley/Color 30/144)
Directions:
Prep Hair:
- Start with stretched natural hair (old twist out)
- Stretch braiding hair
- Set up sectioned braiding & wrapping hair for easy grabbing
- Stretched/feather (strecthing the braiding hair on the ends to remove blunt ends) braiding hair
- Part/section real hair
- TIP: Part hair in sections big enough to avoid tension on the root
Installation:
-
- Section braiding hair to match density of real hair
- Loop braiding hair around base of real hair
- Begin braiding towards the ends
- Plat to the end using real hair as the third leg
- TIP: Make sure to braid to the end of real hair
- Repeat process through entire section
- Cut excess hair. (Desired length will vary)
- Pick up small piece of marley hair and wrap down braid
- Wrap marley hair around base/root of the braid twice
- TIP: As you wrap down, be sure to push the hair up as you wrap
- Add in another piece of marley hair when first piece runs out
- Add second piece using same method as the first
- Wrap around braid twice in the same spot
- Continue to wrap down the braid leaving about 1 inch of braiding hair unwrapped
- Tuck the end of the braiding hair
- Wrap the tucked end with the remaining marley hair
- Wrap every strand of the marley hair tightly around braid
- Soft hand roll the end of the loc
- Repeat the process through the rest of your head

What do you think about the crochet faux locs?
I think they could be a great alternative… I personally like to see my scalp in between each loc.
Thank you!
