Regardless of what you may have heard, every woman needs a best friend. You can’t make it out here in the world without a little girl power and support in your corner. I understand the need to keep friendships at a minimum, cause hey, quality over quantity. But surely there is at least one woman out there who gets you. And yes, I also understand fully about being burned by supposed friendships in the past. But that doesn’t mean that every woman is the same. If you still don’t think so here are six reasons why have a female best friend is necessary:

Having someone to talk to and listen to you

Whether you’re mad at your partner, your boss or life in general, your best friend will be there to lend an ear for you to vent your frustrations. They will hear you out and give you advice they think will help you work through your problems. Think of it this way, having a best friend is like having a therapist who is always on call for you, minus those expensive co-pays.

Having someone who is there for you

After getting that long overdue promotion at work (Yay!) your best friend will be right there to cheer you on. They’ll be the first to offer to take you out to celebrate. Or when the chips are down they’ll also be the first to offer to come over and help cheer you up. Or if your car won’t start they’ll sit with you (in person or on the phone) until AAA arrives. Reliable. This is what a true best friend is.

Having someone who motivates you

Everyone needs a cheerleader in their corner. Going back to that promotion, before you got it you were all slumped doubting yourself, wondering if you even really deserved a promotion. But your best friend wants none of that talk. She’s gonna stand you up, grab your face and look you in the eye like Viola Davis did that little girl in The Help and say, “You is smart, you is kind, you is important.” And it’s true because you are. Now get out there and conquer the world.

Having someone you can be yourself around

It’s great when you can be around someone whom you can be your complete self around. To be able to let your guard fully down and let all your quirks and awkwardness shine through. Things other people will give you judgy eye for, your bestie will be right there with you cause she gets you, and quite frankly, that’s all that matters.

Having someone to keep your secrets

Holding in your innermost dark secrets can take a toll on you mentally and physically. To have someone whom you trust to keep those secrets safe will free your shoulders of the weight you’ve been carrying around. Getting those thoughts and feelings out into the open in a judgmental free zone shows that you don’t have to suffer alone and in silence.

Having someone who keeps it real with you

Your best friend will always let you know when you’re doing or thinking something that just doesn’t make any sense. They will check you and give you alternative options. It may be tough to hear, but it comes from a place of love. Remember, real friends aren’t going to tell you what you want to hear, they’re going to tell you what you need to hear.
