So, I’m sure you’ve heard the term “I’m going natural.” But what does that really mean? There are many perceptions about what it means to go natural – especially for a newbie to the natural hair game. Some people think that having natural hair means that you cannot utilize weaves or wigs. That is completely wrong.  My fiancé was convinced that women who added any additional hair can’t be natural. And that was when I realized that it is not just my fiancé that feels this way. But rather many other people out there have misconceptions as well. Starting on your natural hair journey at times cannot only be stressful, but can leave you clueless. I know firsthand how that can be because that was totally me. No worries, I have a few tips to share with you, as you’re embarking on your natural hair journey.

Embrace Your Journey!

I think for beginners this may be one of the hardest concepts to understand. Because it’s great to have hair goals, but confusing when your hair journey does not reach the potential in your expected timespan. At times, we want quick gratification that our hair and curl pattern will be exactly how we want it to be. But in actuality, most of the time it does not happen that way. Our hair has to now understand that it is undergoing a new method and it has to be trained to conduct itself accordingly. Like I tell people all the time, your tresses have its own personality. And that’s totally okay! As time goes on, its personality will allow you to experiment and find styles that compliment you.

Products Will Be Trial and Error

What works for your friends or women you admire may not work for you. Understanding this concept is key because it can be frustrating when your hair does not come out how you want it to. Purchasing various products definitely cost money – and more money than we intend on spending sometimes.  But there are other ways you can definitely stack up on products without going broke. I wrote a post, “How to Manage Being a Product Junkie” ,that I know will help you. When you find a product that works well for you – stick with it! That’s how you know what will or will not be your staple. And from there you are on your way to building a collection that works well for you.

Have Fun!

This is the most important part of your journey – the joy you feel being a naturalista. I was liberated and happy to have made this decision for myself when I initially went natural.  I felt like I was more myself and started to understand me more. Also, figuring out new styles that complimented me was exciting. When I did not like the results of my hair was when I received the most compliments. Go figure! It was through this that I realized that there was never a bad hair day for me. The more I experimented with my tresses, styling my hair became therapeutic and an enjoyment for me – because being natural is endless.

Natural hair is the hair you were naturally born with.

With that being said, know that your mane was uniquely designed for you. To enjoy, love it, and more importantly give it some TLC! My motto with all things new is – your pace, your race. This can definitely be applied to all my newly natural loves out there. There is no “right process” you must undergo. Being natural is a lifestyle. Embrace your path as you embark on your new journey. Cheers!
