Who doesn’t love eggnog? It is one of the staple drinks for this holiday season. You can always tell the holiday season is here or closely approaching because in every supermarket or grocery store, lies a variety of eggnog on full display. A few years ago I started transitioning to a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, I am always looking for new ways to create healthier food and drink options for myself – of which eggnog being one of them. As often as I can, I try to find ways to invigorate my taste buds. Creating this Chia-Nog was absolutely fun to make!
According to WebMD, chia seeds contains “fiber, protein, antioxidants, and omega-3s.”
I use chia seeds for just about everything! I might add them to salads, smoothies, and various desserts such as pudding. Since chia seeds are multi-purpose, I was confident that adding this to my recipe would fit perfectly. The chia seeds not only gave this nog a different texture, but it was more filling. This was important for me because when making smoothies, sometimes they are not satisfying enough to quench your appetite. This was also the main reason why I knew adding bananas would be a great addition and an amazing alternative to fulfill this recipe. Bananas are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and digestion. I’ve learned these health benefits from grandmother. As long as I could remember she’s been eating a banana a day – and still does!
For sweeteners, since I was attempting to figure out what would result in a great taste, I decided to use every sweetener in my cabinet! I started out with smaller measurements until I reached the right amount (that I added below in this recipe) I personally desired. This smoothie is definitely refreshing and will be great to consume as a meal substitute or in conjunction as a great snack.
Cheers to your next Chia-Nog!
