With spring in bloom and warmer days approaching now is the time to change up your beauty regimen and spring clean your makeup collection. How you were taking care of your skin in the winter won’t be the same in the spring. But this is about more than just changing your routine this is also about taking a long hard look at your current makeup collection and determining what you need to keep and what you need to discard.
I’m sure this is something that’s been on your to-do list for a while only you’ve never got around to actually doing it. But I’m here to tell you – the time has arrived. Open those makeup bags and those bathroom counter drawers and rid yourself of all the products you no longer need. It may hurt you to do it but your skin and your bathroom counter will thank you for it. Trust me.
Clean your makeup brushes
You have to clean the brushes often to remove all of the old makeup that’s caked on which can be a haven for bacteria. You don’t want to put that on your face. Doing so can irritate your skin and cause it to breakout. Set a reminder in your planner or on your phone – clean those brushes.
Throw out expired products
Like you, I’m guilty of sometimes not only keeping products beyond their expiration but I’m also guilty of using them. I know, I know. Sometimes knowingly and often times unknowingly. Which is why keeping track of when you purchase your beauty products will help you steer clear of clogging your pores with expired product.
Here’s a basic breakdown of the approximate shelf life of your makeup:
Mascara – 2 to 3 months
Eyeliner – 3 months
Eyeshadow – 3 months
Foundation – 6 to 12 months
Concealer – liquid 1 year / powder & stick 1 to 2 years
Face Powder – 2 years
Blush – 1 year
Lipstick/Lip Gloss – 1 year
Toss other unwanted products
It makes no sense for you to keep things that serve no purpose other than creating clutter. If it’s not expired and you don’t want to throw it away call up your girls and ask them if they want any of it. They also can, in turn, can clean their makeup and offer you anything they no longer want. It’s a win-win for all.
Organize and designate one place for your makeup
Can’t find your angles eyebrow brush or your favorite mini eyeshadow palette? That’s probably because it’s at the bottom of your makeup bag or left wherever you last did your makeup. This spring treat yourself to a makeup organizer or makeup box so that you can keep everything neatly organized.
Change your moisturizer
The moisturizer used in the fall and winter wouldn’t be the same one used in the spring and summer. Why? Because the winter formula is thicker and now with the warmer months approaching you will want to apply something lightweight and contains SPF 30.
Change your sunscreen
Speaking of SPF, with the change in season now is the time to make sure you increase the level of sunscreen you apply to your skin. As mentioned before make sure you’re wearing ab SPF starting at least 30. Also, don’t forget to check the expiration date on it. If you don’t think it will expire or worse you think you don’t need cause you have melanin I’m here to tell you that’s incorrect. You need to protect your skin during all four seasons.
Use lightweight foundations
With the weather warming up you’ll want to shy away from foundations and other products that are heavier and more geared towards the colder months. Using those products now will make your face an oil slick and no one wants that. To prevent this from happening look into lighter more airy foundations that will allow your skin to breathe.
Switch to lighter palette makeup
During the fall and winter months, it was all about the darker and deeper tones. Now that it’s spring it’s time to switch it up and swap out those deep fall colors for lighter and brighter springtime hues. Of course, you can still wear darker hued makeup but the lighter tones will help you get into the spirit of the arrival of spring.
Treat yourself
There are a ton of new beauty trends that are hitting the market and now that you’ve spring cleaned your existing makeup collection now you can reward yourself by getting a few new releases and other items you want to try.
