New Year’s is a great time for parents to start fresh and make new commitments to being better parents for our kids. It’s not easy taking care of a family. It seems like you’re pulled in so many different directions that it’s difficult to accomplish anything. However, with a little determination and a lot of patience, you can make a difference in your children, which will make a difference in your family as a whole.
Here are five New Year’s resolutions for parents:
Spend more quality time with your kids
It’s easy for busy parents to get in the habit of multitasking, such as preparing dinner while holding a conversation. However, kids need quality, one on one time with their parents. Make time to give your kids your undivided attention, even if it’s only for a few moments each day.
Praise more and complain less
Focus more on the good things that your kids do and less on what they don’t. Knowing that you noticed the good things will help encourage kids to do better in the areas where they need improvement.
Really listen when your kids talk
Pay attention when they’re telling you about their day and the things that are important to them. You can learn a lot about them this way and they can come up with some amazing things that might surprise you.
Be a good role model
Your kids are watching you and learning from your example, even if they don’t act like it. Be a good role model for them. Treat them respectfully and teach them that being a good, caring person and respecting others is a very important part of life.
Commit to helping the planet
If you’re not recycling already, then start. Take steps to conserve water and electricity. Plant some trees. All of these things help to teach kids how important it is to take care of the earth.
