Well ladies we’ve reached the last feature in our four part series, Natural At Any Stage In Life: A Four Part Natural Hair Journey. This series will allow you to connect with four ladies on their natural hair journeys. Because that’s what natural hair does, it connects us. And the most amazing thing about about these connections is that they can happen anywhere. It doesn’t matter your background, upbringing or education as it is our natural hair journey that will forever join us.

Over the course of this series I introduced you to Olamide, Reese, Nagawa who shared their natural journeys. Today you’ll meet Yemi who will share how she came to rock her current style and the one thing she loves most about her hair.

Yemi, 20-something, Digital Product Designer

When did you first go natural?

Oh, man I actually don’t remember when I officially went natural. It’s been that long but if I had to guess I would say it’s been at least 6 years since I’ve had a relaxer.

How are you currently rocking your hair and why?

About 3 months ago, I did a major chop and had all of my hair cut low. All summer, I’ve been rocking my baldie with pride, which has been really easy and convenient, especially in the hot weather. I’m also having fun experimenting with fades, surgical cuts and designs!

I made the leap to cut it all off after being inspired by beautiful women like Lupita Nyongo and Michaela Cole. I had been contemplating it for a couple of years but I was hesitant to cut off what I had spent years trying to grow. At the same time, I also felt like I needed a restart for my hair – my edges are pretty weak and broken and I figured that a good cut would level out my hair and allow it to grow back more evenly. But I’ve been so in love with the low cut, that I keep going back to my barber!

What do you love the most about your hair?

Right now I’m loving how low maintenance my short cut is, especially on days when I’m active and working out. And in general, I love the texture and the feel of kinks, coils and curls.

Do you have a natural hair journey to share? Did Yemi’s story resonate with you? Leave your comments below as we would love to hear from you.
